New Mexico LISW and LMSW

In New Mexico the two clinical licenses are the Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) and the Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW).  In order to become an LISW you must first become an LMSW and this information is listed in the table below.

A note about the ASWB exam for the LISW from the NM Board “Candidates with a masters degree in social work, who wish to provide mental health services (psychotherapy,
counseling, etc) must take the Clinical category of the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examination.
Candidates with a master’s degree in social work, who wish to represent themselves as social workers and provide
social work services only (case management, psychosocial assessments, etc) may choose to take EITHER the
Advanced or Clinical category of the ASWB examination.”
